How does DSL allow me to be on the phone & be on the Internet at the same time?

The DSL service uses the high frequency of the phone wires, voice traffic uses the lower frequency.

The two do not interfere with one another.

You can have DSL and still make and receive voice or fax calls -- your phone number doesn't change, the way you use your phone doesn't change. It's really easy to install Signal Ring Plus (sometimes called Distinctive Ring Plus) on your phone line so when a FAX comes in, it goes directly to the FAX machine.
Q: Can I hook up more than one computer to my DSL line?
A: Oh yes! you can hook up as many computers as you wish to the DSL. You will need to provide a network hub and cables, or a wireless network. Give us a call, we have equipment available that can be purchased for a very nominal fee to set up multiple computers.

Q: If I don't have my PCs networked in my home/office but I want to have them all access the Internet, what should I do?

A: If you don't want to hook the computers to the hub, there are several local companies than can help you install (or add to) a local area network (LAN) in your home or office. These companies can provide installation of the data cabling (jacks, cables, raceways or other necessary hardware), hubs or switches, and further consulting (such as network security or networked application setup). Please contact Wave Internet Services if you would like additional information about these services.

latest forums about DSL

DSL service is provided to those users who are within 18,000 feet of the Embarq central office.

Downloads that literally would have taken a full day on a 56k modem, can be taken care of during lunch.

Our DSL will allow you to get the "real" experience from your favorite RealAudio sites. Streaming Audo comes alive at broadband speed. Online gaming becomes a truly unbelievable experience!

LAPTOPS

You can use a laptop with DSL almost as easily as a desktop. Instead of an internal modem, or ethernet card, you need to buy a PCMCIA card supporting 10/100 ethernet (if your laptop has no ethernet port on it). They are a little expensive.

The other option is to select a USB DSL modem when getting a line (if your laptop has a USB port on it).
Apart from the choice of ethernet PCMCIA card, or USB modem, everything else is the same as a desktop DSL connection

Q: Will I need another phone line to use DSL?

DSL uses your regular phone line (also known as a POTS, or plain old telephone service line) and does not affect the use of the line for other things.

Once you have DSL installed, you can't switch from Embarq local phone service to another carrier, or else your DSL service will be disconnected.

What is DSL? How much does it cost?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is an always-on internet connection that ends in a socket on your wall, that looks much like a phone socket. The socket is exactly a phone socket, and, for the popular residential DSL, (ADSL) it does indeed carry phone and data!

The key advantage of DSL over modem is speed. DSL is from several, to dozens, of times faster than a modem connection.

Q: Will my Embarq phone bill change?

A: NO! Wave Internet Services will bill you for all aspects of your DSL service. Your Sprint bill will not change, and you will not pay Sprint for your DSL service. Wave Internet Services will be your single point of contact.

A complex web page that could take over a minute to finish loading, can appear in just seconds over DSL.

Q. My neighbor has DSL, why don't I?

A: DSL is a technology where distance really matters.
Most Telcos limit ADSL lines to 15,000 ft from the CO (not as the crow flies, but how long the actual circuit is). If you're lucky, it may be 18,000 ft. If your neighbor across the street has DSL and the phone company will not qualify you, there are several possible reasons why:

A. Your neighbor may have gotten lucky and he caught the loop before it went around the ENTIRE block.
B. The telco's records may be out of date.

Q: Which is better, a cable modem or DSL?

A: Internet access via cable TV facilities shares your bandwidth among your entire neighborhood. As more and more people in your area use the cable With DSL, you always have your allotted bandwidth available, without having to share it with other people on your street. If you have 768Kbps/128Kbps DSL, then you'll always have 768Kbps of bandwidth available for you for downloads. We don't block certain kinds of inbound traffic (the Internet to your PC) like some cable companies do, so you can run a mail, www or ftp server without difficulty.
